2017 Goals

In past years, I’ve had one or a few words or things I’ve focused on. Back in the day, I used to have bigger lists of lots of smaller goals. I still like the idea of a big goal word/focus, however I’m too metric-oriented to rely on that. In 2017, I have a lot of things I want to work on, and if there had to be a theme, it’d be “growth.” I want to grow healthier, grow stronger, grow my relationships, grow my finances, and just grow happier. Basically…the same concepts as past years.

This year, I have a lot of things that I already know are going to happen:

  • I’m having an ACL reconstruction with double meniscus repair on my left knee in 1.5 weeks
  • I’m the matron of honor in my maid of honor’s wedding in the spring
  • I’m seeing Anastasia on Broadway in NYC in late spring
  • I’m having tea at the Plaza in NYC in early summer
  • One of my bridesmaids and one of our groomsmen are getting married in the summer (not to each other, but on the same day in different states)
  • I’m going to England and Scotland in early fall
  • My dad is getting remarried in early fall (he was widowed in 2014)
  • I’m going to Disney in late fall

I’m also still deciding, but mostly decided, on having a vertical sleeve gastrectomy in 2017. This is a bariatric procedure that reduces the size of your stomach by about 70-80%. A close family member had the procedure in 2016, and it has changed her life completely. As a result of her choice, I’ve learned a lot and done a ton of research on the procedure (and other options) and its implications. Given my constant struggles with weight loss and gain, my own health reality, my family’s intensely negative medical history of heart disease/high blood pressure/high cholesterol/diabetes, and wanting to have healthy pregnancies and be active with my kids, I think it’s the right choice for me. It’s scary, but the risks are much lower than I ever thought, my insurance covers it, and it’s a tool I know I’d take full advantage of.

So…that’s a lot. In theory, I know that should be it. Who needs goals when you have plans laid in stone already? But, while exciting, and involving growth in a lot of ways, I want to resolve to specific other things to help me along.

Goals:

  • Relationships
    • Surprise husband with seduction when he arrives home one evening
    • Volunteer with my husband at least once
    • Call, write, facetime, visit, or send a surprise to one non-immediate family member (Aunt, Uncle, Cousin, etc.)
  • Finance
    • End the year as I start, with credit cards zeroed out
    • Acquire no new debt (for me or my husband)
    • Stay within budget for the whole year
  • Culture
    • Read 52 books
    • Take a class on something (home buying, photography, photoshop, cooking, etc.)
    • Go to the Udvall Hazy Museum
  • Adventures and Happiness
    • Do 100 days of happiness on instagram
    • Cook a recipe from each cookbook I own.
    • Complete at least one thing from my bucket list (see new post on bucket list)
  • Work
    • Plan a brownbag/event at work

Strive for these less measurable things:

  • Reply to texts more quickly (try for within 12 hours of receipt)
  • Call friends and family more frequently (try for one person a week), even if just for 10-15 minutes
  • Commit to knee rehab/PT for my ACL recovery
  • Go to bed earlier (10pm is the goal for M-Th)


Things I’d like to continue from 2016:

  • Book Club(s)
  • Game Nights
  • Trying new recipes (and keeping track of them)
